A fresh start, all the same.

I can’t stop taking photos of tourists taking photos of each other.

I don’t even know why I do it. Certainly not because I find them appalling or anything like that. (Just 45 seconds later somebody else took a similar photo of me.)

Oh wait. I just remembered why I take these: (A very deep and unspoken desire to imitate) Martin Parr.

… I feel like crying after that statement. Some things should be kept private.

I did the balloon.

Mariliza, if you’re reading this: The person standing next to me in the balloon was a fantastic Greek woman who (i) was wearing an impeccable bright yellow trenchcoat, huge shades, and hair sprayed to infinity, and (ii) had the insane ability to talk non-stop from 5:30 am to 8:30 am. (Except when we got as high as 1,000 meters. Everyone was a little too terrified to speak at that moment). (And after the balloon,  I saw her getting breakfast in the hotel. She was singing and dancing to herself with the plate in her hand.) NOT THAT I AM DRAWING ANY PARALLELS HERE but every time she went “oreos!” and “ella mou!”, I wanted to grab the woman, stare right into her eyes and say “Mariliza. I know you’re there. I know you have possessed this woman and we are doing this together right now. I know it, man. No one talks that fast at 5:30″.  Except I couldn’t. No grabbing allowed in the balloon. The balloon pilot/master/blower? told us that there have been incidents of vomiting, though- which should be a riot for the ones on the ground.

Mount Erciyes in the distance. And my father’s hometown a little ahead. Let’s wave.

By the way, some of these “fairy chimneys” are still being used as homes and such. We were happy to be welcomed to one.

I’m not sure if the following photos are entirely legal. I couldn’t figure out if the red line on the camera sign meant don’t take photos with flash or don’t take photos at all. But these are too pretty, and I guess Jesus would forgive.

Inside of a cave church (Karanlık Kilise – Dark Church) in Cappadocia.

I could swear that either Çağla or Emrah went back in time and drew the guy in the circle on the right.

I thought of their paintings/drawings a lot while I was taking these photos. And I immediately got that “I wish they were here right now” feeling, which I often get when I think of them.

Before entering the Dark Church, we saw the Snake Church which had a fantastic fresco depicting Onuphrius.

Half woman, half bearded old man; we were told a couple of times that Onuphrius was once a beautiful woman who hated all the men’s attention so she prayed really hard to look like a man and she got what she wanted…  partially. I found this quite interesting (and a bit sad because “attention” probably meant rape) but I googled it and couldn’t find any such story about Onuphrius. Although, if it’s true, he really should be the patron saint of transsexuals.

I also did the whole jesus peace sign thing (like in the first photo) inside one of these churches and made my sister take a photo of it – which was supposed to be hilaaaaarious. But the camera totally betrayed me and I looked like the living dead (yet another proof that God is great…) So yes,  that photo went to photo hell. Purgatory at best.

Ablamın rahatını bozmayı pek severim…

Ablam da okumayı ve okurken uykuya dalmayı.

Sonra ben gelirim, “KALK! FOTOĞRAF ÇEKİNCEZ” derim vicdansızca. İşte ben buyum abla. Ablaa, ablaaa. Ab kısa, vurgu laa’da, ton mızmız, “ömrünü tüketmeye geldim” havası.

Ve inanmayacaksınız ama ablam kalkar. Ya fotoğrafını çekmek için bir insanı uyandırmak çok büyük bir canavarlık. Filmi banyo ettirip ablamın mahmur mahmur pozlarını görünce biraz utandım… biraz da kıkır kıkır güldüm.

Ablamın adı ablam değil tabii. Bana zorla öğrettiler abla demeyi, şimdi Ekim diyemiyorum.

Bu arada annemle aramın biraz açık olduğu bir sırada, rüyamda annemin bana “Sen aslında evlatlıksın, öz kızımız değilsin” diye bir konuşma yaptığını gördüm. Rüyada anneme “O  zaman ablama neden o kadar benziyorum” diye soruyorum böyle panik halinde, yalanını çıkarmak için. Annem “Tesadüf oldu” diyor.

Şimdi komik ama rüyanın gerisi de çok fena. Ben gerçek annemle buluşuyorum. Böyle anlaşılmaz, gizemli, güvenilmez bir kadın. Nasıl sinir oluyorum, nasıl sinir oluyorum. Sonra rüyayı anneme anlattım, çok güldü. “Biz seni Mersin çingenelerinden aldık” şakasını yüz milyonuncu kez yaptı. Ben hiç gülmedim. Bu saçmasapan rüyadan vardığımız sonuç elbette evlatlık ya da çingene olmanın kötü bir şey olduğu değil, bazı çocukların ne kadar sevgiyle büyüseler de hep daha fazla sevgiye, ilgiye olan açgözlülükleri ve güvensizlikleri.  Bu zavallı duruma bir örnek de  ablamın ilkokul mezuniyetinde 4 yaşındaki benim bütün fotoğraflara sağdan soldan aşağıdan kafamı sokma çabalarımın belgelerle sabit olması. Ablamın ise benim hatırladığım, bildiğim kadarıyla hiç böyle endişeleri olmadı.

Bu arada kendisi pek zeki olduğu için portre çekmenin salaklıklarını hemen idrak etti. “Niye öyle durayım, niye oraya bakayım, oradan araba geçiyor, çok saçma…”, vb.

Neyse önüne zeytin koyduk da, sustu.

2009′un ilk fotoları

1 Ocak 2009 tarihinde ilk kez bir palaroyd fotoğraf çektim. Polarayd zevkli bir şey… ama çok da değil. Belki de ilk çektiğim poloroyt ultrason berraklığında çıktığı için böyle hissettim. Sakallarından seçebildiğim kadarıyla nurtopu gibi bir havyer bardemimiz olacak GİBİ GİBİ. Javier Bardem demişken… kendisini en güzel şekilde ağırlayacağımı düşünüyorum. Eheh, mrb.

Scanner’ımın bozukluğu beni böyle artistliklere sevkediyor.

2009′a yine vapur fotoğrafları damgasını vuracak gibi…… HAHAHAHAHAHA

In February, Charlotte came to Istanbul.

In March, spring came to Istanbul.

“If your pictures aren’t good enough, you… may need to leave the apartment first” is what Robert Capa would have to say about this pathetic taking-photos-from-the-apartment-window genre, which I’d humbly like to think that I invented. (Yes, by all means please post a zillion better and older and famous photos taken from apartment windows in reply, just to remind me once again that I invented nothing. But know this, you’re mean.)

Apologies to photography, already the laziest art. I should have tried harder.

The following photo could provide some motivation:

My maternal grandfather’s family (and mine of course) in 1939. Kudos to the photographer for getting only half of my great-uncle in the frame. My mother’s father on the right, clinging to my great-grandfather. I have  so much to say but I’m scared of sounding like I take credit of their story. Maybe if I title it  “Turkish peasants circa 1939″, I’ll neutralize it for you (and myself) slightly.

Susan Sontag says, “All photographs are interesting as well as touching if they are old enough”.

I want to believe that the same applies to pop songs. Get Busy will become… the new Electric Avenue, and we’ll finally be able to unironically dance to Sean Paul.

That is of course if you can dance dancehall.

Which, objectively speaking, I can’t.

But you know how relative these things are…

Bir David Bowie filmi çekilecekse Bovi’yi Michael Vartan oynayabilir diye düşünüyorum. (Bauwi  değil, n’olursunuz. Gerçi Bovi de biraz Jon Bon Bovi gibi oldu)

Michael Vartan’ın da adını yeni öğrendim. Kendisini daha önce Luke Perry’nin sarışını olarak çağırıyordum. Ya aslında tüm bunların sorumlusu birkaç gün önce Never Been Kissed’i veren televizyon kanalı. Sonra ben Çağla’nın tumblr’ında David Bowie’nin eski bir fotoğrafını gördüm. Aaa Luke Perry’nin sarışınına benziyor (ama ilginç bir şekilde Luke Perry’ye benzemiyor) dedim.  Sonra “efendime söyliyim”, imdb’ye bakıverdim. Michael Vartan’ın film kariyeri tahmin edeceğiniz üzere biraz acıklı; yani David Bowie’yi oynatmaları, aaam nası derler, maverikçe olur. (Öyle mu olur Duygu? “Maverikçe” mi olur? Tüüüüh senin kalıbına) Neyse ya ortada öyle bir film de yok zaten. Ya da vardı dimi, orada da Jonathan Rhys-Meyers oynadıydı.

Bu arada Hürriyet’te Jonathan Rhys Meyers röportajı vardı. Neden şişko Henri’yi senin gibi bir filinta oynuyor diye soruyorlar. O da “Bilmiyorum. Yönetmene sormak lazım” diyor. Gerçi Hürriyet’in tercümesine nasıl güvenilir bilmiyorum. Adam o noktada “I would like a sandwich” demiş de olabilir. Herneyse, benim bu soruya iyimser cevabım ise şöyle. Çünkü şişko pezevenk Henri  aynaya baktığında muhtemelen Jonathan Rhys Meyers gibi birini görüyordu da ondan. Kötümser cevabım ise tabiiki bunun da dizinin aptallıklarından, “gençleri hedefliyoruz” mallıklarından bir tanesi olması. Neyse zaten dizinin bir-iki bölümünü izledim, onda da “Henri” kankasıyla tenis oynuyor ve puan kazanınca da stilize Fred Perry hareketleri yapıyordu. Anne Boleyn de böyle tek kaşını kaldırarak seksilikler peşindeydi falan. Rezillllllllll. Kırincccccc. Gerçekten bir an için Mulan hakkında suç duyurusunda bulunan milliyetçileri hissettim ta derinlerde. Çarpıtma var!

Bu arada geçenlerde Elif Şafak’ın CİNLERİNE küfrettiğim için tüm işlerimin bozulduğunu, grip olduğumu, alnımda sivilce çıktığını BİLİYOR MUYDUNUZ? İşte yaradanın varlığına en güzel kanıt…

Ayrıca fotoğraf makinelerinin içindeki filmleri üç aydır bitirmediğim ve banyoya götürmediğim gerçeği beni çok sıkıyor. Halledeceğim en kısa sürede. Görüşürüz.
